The Ebb & Flow of Life

> Here is an article I ran across through a magazine I read occasionally.  It's fairly liberal at times, but it does have awesome articles from time to time.  Read the article, then my comments, and then add your own. <

Article: The Ebb & Flow of Life

There is so much in life that we have yet to experience. Words cannot convey the raging passion my spirit has to travel the world to gain wisdome, have experiences that shed new light on my life, and further propel me down my road.

"The shortest path to oneself is around the world."
-Count Hermann Keyserling, (german Philosopher)

I love how this guy dropped what he was doing, to travel the country side, in order to learn from another culture. Other cultures on this earth have so much to offer us, if we just open our eyes. I often feel that we are too proud to do so. I believe that americans need to be more open minded. I'm sure everyone has heard the expression: "if you speak 3 languages, your trilingual. If you speak 2, your bilingual. But if you speak one language, your American."
I refuse to be part of a that group. I'm always open and ready to accept the teachings and thoughts of other cultures, with an open mind.
The only thing stopping you from reaching your goals is yourself.

What you you all think about all of this?  Any thoughts or elaborations?

  1. It amazes me how other cultures can really open one's eyes up to things. I mean, it's true, we don't tend to embrace other cultures' wisdom; yet, it can have so much of an impact. Ya know? Yeah, obviously some wisdom and common sense should be applied and testing it to make sure that it's right, not just taking it for truth; but still, exposure to what others have learned in life(within reason) is usually a great thing and opens up my eyes. As for the article---I really like the end where it says, "Like the ocean, you can begin to feel the power of flowing without resisting. Flowing without fighting against. Water surrounds and moves past all obstacles, and you can do the same." I've recently been experiencing the effects of "flowing without resisting vs. flowing (or trying to) AND still resisting.

btw---that pic is sweet! I like it!

  2. Ya ur exactly right. I actually posted this on Myspace a few years ago, n copied it over here. There are plenty of things that we should not adopt from other countries. Namely, socialism. >,<
Ya I like these kinda pix. It's a longer exposure or somethin, which makes the water look really cool.
Martial arts is all about flowing, overcoming obstacles, and being in tune with life. Drawing applications from nature to our lives is it's specialty. In japan, the philosophy of martial arts is embraced in the culture. So in a sense, a lot of people are martial artists, with out even knowing how to kick someones butt.

  3. yup. I think it has something to do with shutter speed.
cool. I like how the japanese are so "in tune" with their surroundings.

I know a guy who is currently on a trip that started in Japan (I think) and will end all the way over in Europe. I'm excited to hear some stories when he gets back. :D

  5. Hmm, wow, that was an interesting article! It just reminded me of how much I loathe not being able to tell stories of time spent in somewhere other than the U.S.
From what I can tell, travel outside of our 'world' of our own country changes us significantly... personally, I can't wait to go. God's just got to direct me!

  6. You haven't traveled out of the country yet?
Yeah I know that when I travel, I really get to see my life from an outside looking in perspective. It really adds another dimension to l life, n how we view or react to things.
